How to Choose the Right Face Wash for Your Skin Type

Your cleanser sets the stage for everything else. Pick wrong and the best serum in the world can't save you.

Cleansing is the most underrated step in skincare. Get it wrong — too harsh, too stripping, wrong pH — and you spend the rest of your routine trying to undo the damage.

The pH test

Healthy skin sits at pH 4.7-5.5. Cleansers above pH 7 (most bar soaps, many "deep cleansing" foams) disrupt this and trigger oil overproduction, dryness, and sensitivity. Look for cleansers marketed as "pH-balanced" — they're usually around 5.5.

What to use, by skin type

  • Oily / acne-prone: Gel cleanser with Niacinamide. Avoid SLS.
  • Dry / mature: Cream cleanser with Ceramides and humectants like Aquaxyl.
  • Combination: Gentle gel with skin-barrier-supporting ingredients.
  • Sensitive: No fragrance, no essential oils, no SLS/SLES, no high-pH soap.

How long to cleanse

Surface dirt rinses off in 5 seconds. Sebum and SPF residue need 60 seconds of gentle massage to fully break down. Time yourself — you'll be surprised how long 60 seconds actually is.

Water temperature

Lukewarm. Hot water strips lipids; cold water doesn't dissolve sebum. The "splash of cold at the end to close pores" thing is a myth — pores don't have muscles. Just rinse, pat dry, move on.

Get the cleanser right and your skincare suddenly starts working better, without changing anything else.
